Physician responsibilities for refilling prescription orders

There are important steps necessary in the procedure for refills of controlled medications.

Medication management of controlled prescription refills require:

  • Chart review before every refill
  • Patient evaluation
  • Possible phone calls to the parent/school
  • Review the treatment plan - Every refill.
  • Write the precription
  • Arrange delivery of the prescription to the parent or guardian

Most physicians do not wish to refill controlled substances without a patient's chart. It is difficult, if not impossible, to responsibly prescribe controlled medications without patient history and documentation.

It is important to have one medical home for your controlled medications. A clear and continuous record of your medication and behaviors is important in your treatment.
